  • Hi Yvonnick. Thanks for your input. I will work on cleaning it up as you recommend.

    On the topic of microphones:

I have used two different mics, each has different challenges. Both the cup shape, and the standard mics are easy enough to hold when using a diatonic harmonica, but when it comes to the 16 hole chromatic, there is an issue with hand fatigue over a long period of playing time. Also, the hand holding the mic is the…[Read more]

I agree! I was recently in NYC, and had a chance to meet Yvonnick while he was playing at a restaurant on the East Side. I enjoyed his playing, but even more so, I was able to purchase his new CD, New York Moments directly from him. I love all the songs played with a great instrumental backup. As a lover of the Blues, naturally, I was pleasantly…[Read more]

On my recent visit to NYC, I had the pleasure of meeting Yvonnick in person. We met at Zavo on 3rd Ave., where he played with a pianist. I enjoyed! I am also, now a proud owner of “NY Moments”.

Harp unstrung (cool name), you are welcome. I never attempted tuning up reeds. I had taken a workshop with Lee Oscar some time ago, and he included tuning instructions during the two days. He sells a nice tool kit, that I use to adjust reed gaps, and for cleaning both reeds & valves. I used to play mainly diatonic harmonicas at the time. I never…[Read more]

  • Hi Yvonnick,

Is there a problem with this link? I had posted a piece back in December. Since then, I haven’t seen any other showcase posts, nor any comments. Everything else on your course program works well, and I am plugging away with your lessons and exercises. In fact, I have printed a whole lot of exercises to work on while I am not able…[Read more]

This has helped my a LOT! Thank you. I have been wondering for YEARS why my harmonicas were rattling, and sticking. Now, I either use a heating pad, a heating case, or just put the harmonica inside my shirt, or coat – voila! Problem solved. Wow, so simple! Merci a tout! Mauny M.

  • “Yesterdays”. Hi Yvonnick. I believe you had mentioned this piece recently. I bumped into it by accident, and learned how to play by transcribing. Later, I downloaded the Real Book, and found it there, so now I can play two versions. My neighbors, who are Jazz players love this piece too. I think this piece needs an…[Read more]

  • I taped a short Ply-along exercise of Take Five. Doing this puts pressure to stay with the beat. I feel I am getting it better. I spent – and still do – sessions with metronome at various speeds from 70 and up. Your guidance, Yvonnick, is very helpful. Thank you!

Yes, I too enjoyed listening. Congrats to you, Yvonnick!

The topic of harmonica maintenance is very broad, especially when it concerns chromatic harmonicas. I have owned many, and, true, there are common issues that have been addressed over and over again. However, each harmonica, in fact, comes with a “personality” in my opinion. Out of this unique experiences, we discover our own solutions to best con…[Read more]

  • Thank you, Yvonnick. So if I understand correctly, I should count/play an 8th note with each beat at 60 BPM? If I am doing the math correctly it would translate to playing a 1/4 note per two beats, and a full note per 8 beats?

Hope this is helpful to those dealing with a similar problem:

I am replying to my own question. Since I posted this regarding valves popping and sticking, I have taken my Suzuki SCX 48 apart and looked at the valves. I took a chance, and carefully trimmed (blow 7 was the bad culprit) the end of the valve to get it just barely over the narrow edge…[Read more]

I joined Yvonnick’s course two months ago (September 2019). Since age 9 I have been playin diatonic harmonicas (with long breaks lasting years at a time). I always played by ear. At age 8 I had taken to the flute with a teacher, with beginning music theory, but dropped out less then a year later after I received my first harmonica as a gift. I f…[Read more]
