Whether you are playing at your home with a friend guitar player or on a stage performing live with your band, you’ll need to be able to do a count off. The count off shows others what the tempo is and when the music begins. We do not count the piece too off either too fast or too slow. It has to be steady and said loud enough for the musicians to hear it correctly. The secret to a good count off is to feel it strongly in your mind and body before you say it. Starting snapping your finger can help to get the tempo right then count off out loud. Remember that the band needs to know when to begin playing. So they’ll need to know how long your count off will be. For example you could say before: “I’ll count two bars of 4/4”.
