Quarter Notes & Roots

Next, we’re still going to play the root, but four times per bar, one note on every beat.

Sometimes, I’ll be saying TO into the harmonica when inhaling and TU, when blowing out. It gives me a staccato phrasing that I like to use when I’m repeating the same note, many times in a row.

This exercise is similar to replacing the bass player‘s role of keeping the time and outlining the harmony. It’s a great way to make your time feel stronger.

Note that I play Gb in place of Db in the video (7 bars before the last). Sometimes the rhythm section will play Gb7 instead of Dbm7, but both chords work.
